Today, on March 25th, 2013, new area codes will be available in the southern Ontario. The 437 area code will be introduced in the 416/647 area while 365 will be introduced in the 905/289 areas. 416/647 and 905/289 numbers will still be assigned as long as they are still available in your local area. Having multiple area codes in one geographical area is known as the overlay method. This method will not affect any previous phone numbers and will co-exist with current numbers.
The new area codes are needed as the Greater Toronto Area grows in population. To prepare for the need of more numbers, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has decided to assign these codes. Canada's first overlay code, 647, was implemented back on March 5th, 2001 in the Toronto area. The next overlay code for the area is 387 and is reserved for future use.
